Eindhoven is not a quaint medevial city because it was basically flattened in World War II. For photos of current day living click on the links on the left. The following photos are from the Eindhoven historical museum, which is a living history park with two areas. The first is a recreation of prehistoric (before the Romans) buildings. The buildings are based on foundations that were found here along the Dommel river and are constructed from local materials. Even back then waterways were a major means of transportation in the Netherlands. Remains of mortar and pestle were found. The chickens are a modern breed, but do illustrate what happens if you leave food out in the open. The second part of the museum covers life in the 1500's. It was just started a couple of years ago and is a smaller exhibit. The building on the right is an inn which serves light refreshments. They also have a play yard for children. However, the Dutch have a different attitude about liability. The saw below is for young boys to use. It's clearly a modern version of what was used back then, but it gives a good idea of the effort required. In the US, no museum would leave these out for children to use unattended. Actually, several of the boys who tried it, needed their fathers to help them finish cutting through the tree limb.
